Dermatology
A dermatology evaluation begins with the pet owner explaining to the doctor the onset and progression of the skin problem. Historical information that may be important includes the degree of pruritus (itchiness), travel history, ear involvement, flea medications, and if other animals/humans in the household are affected. The doctor then examines the appearance, smell and distribution of the lesions. Further diagnostics involving one or more of the following may be necessary.
- skin scrapings (looking for mites)
- ringworm (dermatophyte) culture
- impression smears
- cytology
- bacterial cultures
- trichogram
- biopsies
- serum allergy testing
- food allergy trials
